Specimen 23: Archive
A Specimen 23 prequel novella
Six days before a name disappears, an old DNA result changes everything.
Christine Avery's job is to help turn decades of medical research into a modern de-identified archive. Then a physician flags a genetic result from 1998—one that may point to an inherited heart condition capable of causing sudden cardiac arrest.
The problem is that the study was never meant to return individual findings. In six days, the protected link between the research record and the person behind it is scheduled to be destroyed.
If Christine follows the plan, they may lose their only chance to warn someone who could be in danger. If she crosses the line and identifies them, she may violate the protections that made the research possible in the first place.
Then Christine finds something else in the archive. Restricted collections. Unexplained cross-references. Records deliberately kept apart from everything around them.
And one small archive that someone made very sure would survive.
